All About Maskne

We have been doing our part to help stop the spread of COVID-19 by wearing face masks. If you are wearing a mask at the grocery store, at work or even at the gym, you may have been noticing increased acne, clogged pores, redness or inflammation on your face. The new term “maskne” explains the reason for our recent skin troubles.

You may be wondering why wearing a mask can lead to acne?

Reason: Our skin sheds cells throughout the day. By wearing a mask, we are trapping these dead skin cells in the area of the mask which causes them to clog your pores.

Solution: Cleanse. Now more than ever we need to wash our faces with the proper products. After wearing a mask for a prolonged period of time, make sure to use a cleanser to cleanse the sweat, oil and bacteria off your face. You want to find a gentle cleanser that won’t further strip your skin of more moisture. I love the Langine Moisturizing Foam Cleanser as well as the new Tatcha Rice Wash. Both are very hydrating yet do a great job of removing dirt and oil.

Solution: Exfoliate. Using an exfoliator 2-3 times per week can help unclog pores that have been clogged by these dead skin cells. My favorite exfoliator is the Paula's Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant. This exfoliant unclogs pores, smooths wrinkles, brightens and evens out skin tone. After cleansing, apply with a cotton round all over the face.

Solution: Moisturize. An important part of any skincare routine is to moisturize. Masks can dry out your skin and damage your skin barrier. To help replenish moisture, I love to use the Tatcha Water Cream after cleansing and exfoliating!

It is so important to protect ourselves and others around us. If masks cause you some acne and irritation, try out these tips! Stay safe everyone.

Love always,

K
