My Summer Internship is Cancelled, Now What?

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, I’m sure a lot of our summer jobs and internships are cancelled. I can relate! I always like to stay busy as I feel that is the best for my mental health. Here are some ideas of things to do this summer to help stay engaged and active so your brain doesn’t turn to mush.
1. Take a summer class
Have you been putting off a class that you are required to take? Do you want to get ahead? Many Universities offer online summer classes. You can even take an online class from a local community college (if your college accepts transfer credits). This is a great opportunity to get ahead with your credits. My goal is to have enough credits to only have to take four courses senior year! Put in that work sis!
2. Learn something new
Have you ever wanted to learn how to do something but never had the time? Now there are no excuses! Whether you want to learn a new language or learn how to knit. Taking up a new hobby is so exciting and a great way to pass the time. This can also be a great resume booster if you learn something in regards to your major.
3. Read!
I am guilty of only reading one book a year and that's in the summer, on the beach. Now that we have the time, try to pick up some good books. One of my favorites is “You are a Badass” by Jen Sincero. This book teaches you how to stop doubting yourself and live an awesome, badass life. If I don’t read much over the summer I feel like my brain is literal mush when it’s time to try to read my school work in September!
4. Keep an eye out for summer sales
If you are looking to decorate your dorm or apartment, keep your eye out for sales! Online shopping is the best and many stores even have curbside pickup now. The Container Store is always having college deals so keep an eye out for those!
5. Clean out your closet!
There really is no better feeling than purging your room. Everytime I clean out my closet I feel so good about it. To have a clean, organized room makes me feel mentally better. This also can help benefit others. Make a donation pile of clothes that you would want to donate to those who are in need. Now more than ever people are in need of clothes, food and supplies. If you have clothes that you don’t wear anymore, think about dropping them in a donation bin.
6. Think about what you want to do
Take this opportunity to think about what you want to do with your life. I can’t tell you how many times I have changed my ideas about what career path I wanted to take and guess what? That's totally okay! So many people change their minds about what they want to do with their lives. You need to do what makes you happy because you will be doing it everyday for the rest of your life. Take this time to try to find yourself and what you are passionate about.
I hope that these spark some ideas for you to do if you are bored or feeling unmotivated. We are in this together. Leave me a comment on some other things you are doing this summer to stay busy.
Love always,
K
